KC's Honor's Banquet 2013

Hi. Once again, KC is invited to this year's Honor's Banquet. To those  unfamiliar to this, it is a year-end activity given by the school to honor academic achievers for the school year. Honors is awarded to students who earn all A's and/or Bs with allowance to one C and High Honors is all As with allowance of one B. Of course, my little princess is High Honors. Woohoo, I am such a proud parent.

Brag Day

Hay naku, can't wait for Monday Brag Day. So here...
Pherry told us over dinner that he was in Distinction, you know, kinda higher than High Honors. Yeah, right... but whatever. I know him to be really smart but Distinction? Woaaah, wait a minute, that needs further investigation, LOL.

The following day, the proud parents that we are--- we proceeded to his school and this is what happened....
We looked in Honors column, NO LLAGA. Hmmmm.

... In High Honors
Shocks, so many names but no Llaga. Just Li, Lam, Le, Lei or any Asian variation. ;

Well, well don't take back your gifts yet aunts and uncles! Because he is ....
. .. here. Yup, seriously.

Ok, ok... just in case you did not see. Mr. Hubbs said--- take another picture because it might not be very clear. Ohhhh, stage daddy!!!
Hahahhaha. I thought I was crazy. Seriously, the last picture is not scripted. HE WANTS TO POINT IT OUT! YUP!

After that, the principal  saw us and kinda sheepishly said, "pictures, ha?" I said, " obvious first timers, ha?"
It was all fun. I love it. I love my crazy family. Happy Thursday my lovelies.

First Day of School 2012

Well,  here we are in October and I am still catching up on LlagaLand's family activities. First day of school and I have not done a Summer 2012 post yet? Woooah! Crazy huh?

Anyway, we do not really go crazy on back-to-school shopping because we do so little by little. Outfits? I buy when they are on sale, so I do not really budget for the beginning of the school year.

Precious came with us. I love it. Although school shopping is crazy, it is fun---we are the Llaga's, remember?

So here they are--- my Three Little Monkeys who don't seem to be so little anymore. Suddenly it hits me. Really? A freshman in high school? AND MOMMY, you are embarrassing---apparently taking pictures is not cool. So what? Did I hide the camera. Nooooo. I pulled over to the side street and convinced the young gentleman that no on is looking. It did not really work but it make him feel better, at least it is not in front of the school. And KC? She's ok, as long as you don not ask her to pose. She smiles, you shoot, get out. HAhahha. No take twos. She smiles, you shoot, get out. Josh just simply runs away. I had to "pull" my "palengkera" stunt to let him stop and smile for mommy.

I meant this shot to be a 2012 school year announcement picture but they refused to put their backpacks down. They said the ground is wet---so OCD like their dad.  I still think the picture is a great concept.

Pherry is now a freshman is high school. He has 4 AP classes (Advance Placement) and 1 Honors class. Needless to say, he is extremely busy and stressed. It has been over 5 weeks and I can still say he is still very organized--I hope he stays that way. That is the only complaint his middle school principal---- she actually wonders how he passes his exams considering how disorganized he is. Just thinking about his school load makes me tired. I did ask him if he wants to enroll in regular classes and he says he is fine. I don't believe in too much stress for kids just to compete. True, you need to have all the edge you could to get to the best colleges but I know the school admissions now are looking more and more to well rounded kids. Gone are the days where academic excellence is the only measure.

Isn't he so handsome? Please indulge my mommy moments. And just so you know, these braces cost an arm and a leg. But I don't care--- having nice set of teeth is an edge in life, right?  ; )

Joshua just ran off. He knew I was going to ask him to smile so I can take pictures. He is so funny. He tells me, "mom, you can't take pictures, Miss Witmer is there." When I looked, I turn around and he is gone I had to yell for him to stop. Oh, boy, I can only imagine when he goes to high school. He actually asked his big bro tips for high school and Pherry just told him..." blend, blend.... wear grey and nothing fancy so no one notices you." What a profound advice, ha?

KC is the last drop off. See, my 3 Little Monkeys go to different schools and this will go on for 3 more years. I know, I thank you. I am a great mom. Hahhahahha. Just kidding. I am sure there are more moms out there who do greater things for their children. Also, Mr. Hubbs drops them off most of the time. Funny side story: Josh told me one day, "mom, ever since Dad started dropping us off, we have never been late." I told him, well, that's because Mom comes from night shift and it is difficult and he tells me "yeah right" and then kisses me knowing he kinda pinched me in the heart a little bit.

My only princess is in middle school officially! Wow. Am I getting old or am I getting old/ Hahahhah. I don't care. My only consolation for getting old is knowing my kids are growing and soon I can see my dreams in fruition. You see, as I always say, my success is defined ONLY by my kids' success. When they are done with school,  have a beautiful, peaceful and meaningful life. Then my job is done.

How about you? Do you go crazy with back to school shopping?  How important is education to your family? Are your kids more into sports or academics? Are you like me--- crazy in taking pictures of your kids? Please share.

Have a good evening folks.

Open House part 2

So tonight, Mr. Hubbs and I attended Pherry's open house. Central Middle School is old and dirty. The lockers are non functional to say the least. I don't know, but ever since Pherry attended here since 6th grade, I never felt comfortable. I am not saying the school is bad or the staff and faculty is mediocre, I am just saying it is not very welcoming and warm like the other schools the kids attend/ed. I have actually a bad experience here but that's another blogspot. The reason I never wrote about it is because I was still angry and I know you can get emotional and not be very objective about it. Anyway, they are building a new one in a different location and be finished supposedly in 2012(?). But that does not mean you can neglect the current school! Right? From what I gather from the meeting, there were a lot of cut backs on programs and funds running out on a lot of activities. The science teacher said she had to incorporate the technology part in science and technology because there are no more classes for it! Meanwhile, Pherry brought home a CD-rom for one of his classes because they don't have enough books. Whaaat? How about those kids without PCs, like my kids? I am sure it's not just Quincy but it is frustrating nonetheless.

The only reason Pherry still attends this school is because it is the only one offering the Advance Placement in Quincy. Since he is in this program, I kinda just ignore the "flaws" of the school. I have spoken to a few parents who said they know people who have pulled their kids off this very tedious and demanding program, add the ugly facility and cold reception of the administration--- I suppose that was an easy decision for them. I would never pull my kids off advance program if they deserve it, but I am not to push them to it either. Although education is important to me and my family, I don't think that life success is based solely in how well you perform
in middle school ( ahahahahh).

Having said that, I liked the way they did the open house this year. They arranged it into " a day in your child's life" kind of thing. You start in homeroom and proceed to the classes as your kid would. You get a feel of how they go about in their daily routine. Boy, was that chaotic or what? I can only imagine Pherry toting his huge and heavy backpack the whole day on those stairs and hallways. Now I pity him, no wonder he is always hungry and tired after school.

The teachers seem to be very warm and knowledgeable. They appear to really care for the children so that's a good thing. I get the feeling they are frustrated also with all the high student teacher ratio, lack of funds and overall financial constraints to them. How can they sufficiently teach with this situation? The best teachers still can! They just have to be more creative and focused on the curriculum.

Open house time is great to reacquaint yourself to educational systems and governance in general. You will find out different things. I will not elaborate here but, tonight I learned 2 things.

1. Education is a right of every child but it is becoming so unbalanced between the poor and the rich --- yes even in great America.

2. You are the only advocate of your child. The teachers are there to do their job. Most of them genuinely care but the bottom line is you, the parent, needs to be involved. I can complain and talk for all I want but if I put the responsibility of my child's education on teachers and schools alone, my child lose, I lose.

The building is dilapidated, teachers are frustrated ( from my viewpoint), there is no funding--- but still our kids can get a great education--- because the students make the school great and not the other way around.

It is my fervent prayer for my kids to get inspiring teachers. Now more than ever, the kids need inspiration-- a role model who can make them WANT to learn, someone who can make them LIKE going to school. Wouldn't that be great?

How about you, do you attend open house? What do you learn?

Today's joy

It is always awesome to hear some good news, but nothing beats news from my children. As everyone knows, Christopher won the citywide essay competition in 2 consecutive years.

Chris and Quincy mayor ( Phelan in 2007)

He was 3rd place in the 3-4th graders' category. I was so happy. Well, more than happy. The following year, he won 2nd place in the 5-6th graders category. He was not very happy about it, but we were. This year, I was not expecting him to be in the race again because he is so busy. He is in the AP ( advance placement class) 6th grade, in a new school. A couple of days ago, he told me that his essay was chosen by his homeroom teacher as a contender for the 6th grade in his school. The principal has yet to decide which among the 6th to 8th graders' essay will be sent as official entry by the school to the City School Committee, who picks out the winner among all the city schools. No big deal for him. Big deal for me... I am a sucker for awards, remember?

Today, my daughter's teacher approched to congratulate  me on KC's essay. See, my daughter worked hard for it. She is so pressured, knowing that Big Bro won it 2 times. Hubby and I always tell her, she can do it, maybe even outdo him. She would not listen, of course. But, on the weekend, she asked me if I could read what she wrote. I was impressed. I tried to "edit" the missspells and repetitive words and wrong fragmenting... but later, I realized, she is in 3rd grade!! They are probably more concerned on the content than composition! So, I let it go!

I am very, very happy today. Being shortlisted for the competition is good enough for me. I will update maybe 2 weeks from now. I promise, no matter what the outcome is. I am praying for KC's entry more though! She needs the boost, middle child syndrome, you know!
